Organic and inorganic are the major categories for chemical manufacturing. Beyond that products are differentiated on whether output is achieved through purifying and extraction methods, or the execution of chemical reactions. Finally they are defined as commodity or specialty items. Regardless of the categorization there is the need to recognize that there will always be some level of variation in both inputs and outputs and the need to track properties of lots along with conforming to a variety of regulatory requirements. Whether used in the manufacture of more complicated products like, fibers, plastics and paper, or are as commodities consumed in the manufacturing operations of industries such as metal working, automotive parts and transportation, managing high energy costs and waste materials are common challenges for industry. Large raw material inventories, so that production processes continue uninterrupted, mean tracking, managing and accounting for materials and output costs in a timely manner is critical. While large producers have economies of scale, small producers are important for providing highly specialized or purified materials and both groups require much of the same functionality that Horizons Manufacturing Suite provides.
